We regularly talk with OU-C students to get their views on relevant topics. This week’s topic involves goals for the year 2010. Below are what some of the campus’ students had to say.
When scanning the 2010 calendar, Matt Sahr is keeping his focus and looking to maintain a balance between academic pursuits and family interaction. “I just want to take a full course schedule every quarter except during the summer and keep working toward my nursing degree,” he said. “I want to use the summer to reunite with my family and maybe do some camping.” The 42-year-old resident of Fairfield County is in his second quarter at OU-C and also took some courses on the Lancaster campus.
Ben Frost, a Zane Trace High School graduate, also has an academic focus this year in addition to pursuing an intriguing pastime. “I would like to catch up with my studies and improve my GPA. I am working weekends but am academically-oriented and focused on my studies. Personally, I would like to continue with biblical fictional narrative writing.” Frost, who is majoring in psychology and human service technology, picked up this unusual hobby when his interest was piqued during a psychology class at OU-C that discussed people’s belief in being pursued by demons.
“I want to finish my degree as soon as possible,” said Tessa Barnes, 28, an early childhood education major from Unioto High School. Barnes, who looks to earn her diploma after fall quarter 2011, took a five-year break from college and feels the change of pace made her a better student. “The break was a good thing. I came back more motivated and more aware of what I want to do with my degree.”
Allison Wellman, a pre-nursing student from Jackson High School, is keeping it simple. “Right now, my goals are pretty basic. I want to get good grades and get into the nursing program.” Although she is planning her upcoming wedding, her focus remains on academics, Wellman said.
A relative academic newcomer is exploring his options. “As a freshman, I want to get good grades and decide on my major,” said Kyle Adams, an undeclared major from Westfall High School who is in his second quarter on campus. “Fall quarter went by quickly. I was leaning toward majoring in the arts, but I an uncertain.”
“My goal is to graduate and get out of here,” said Bobbi Davis, a human service technology major from Waverly, who is charting her future plans in the classroom and beyond. “I plan to get a bachelor’s degree in social work at either Ohio State or the Athens campus. Over the next few years, I would like to get a decent job and build a house.”
In addition to her academic obligations, Raeshell Matney’s schedule gives a whole new meaning to the term “homework.” “I need to finish some mini-projects such as painting rooms in my house. I would also like to spend more time with my family,” said Matney, a human services technology major from Zane Trace High School.”
