OU-C student-athletes share insights with area youth during volleyball camp at YMCA

Ohio University-Chillicothe volleyball players are helping future stars begin their careers during a volleyball camp at the local YMCA this week. Through June 25, OU-C players are leading a camp for students entering grades 4 through 8 at the YMCA of Ross County, 100 Mill St. in Chillicothe. The camp focuses on the basics of the game, including passing, spiking, serving and game tactics.

“Most of our players are from this area and they look forward to sharing their insights with area youth as they help to develop the next generation of volleyball players,” OU-C volleyball Coach Tara Bethel said. “I feel this is an excellent opportunity for our players to step into a leadership role. Many of my players are future educators, and this is a great experience for them. My players are from area high schools, and each brings a unique style of volleyball. I enjoy watching them share their knowledge and skills with future players.”

For Jessica Rodgers, a middle childhood education major from Westfall High School, the camp offers very relevant career preparation. “It is really nice working with children and good experience for my future job in education. It is nice offer these youth an opportunity to get involved with an activity now that they are out of school for the summer. Playing volleyball has been an awesome opportunity for me and especially in college, and I like to share that with future players.”

Her sister, Kari Rodgers, echoed her sibling’s sentiments. “I remember when I was young and it’s great to help these students learn the game. I think it is important that they are able to learn about the game at a young age,” the nursing student said. “Volleyball has been a great part of my college career, and I look forward to it. Sports have always been a big part of my life. I hope that some of these youth will get a feel for the game and some will wind up playing at the college level themselves.”
