Director of Athletics David Shoemaker to lead basketball camp in Caribbean

Ohio University-Chillicothe director of athletics R. David Shoemaker will direct a charity basketball camp on the island of Montserrat from Aug. 16-20. The first-ever “Reach One Teach One – Building Bridges to Success” camp is designed for players ages 6 through 23 and is expected to include approximately 40 individuals.

He will be joined by fellow southern Ohio coach Joshua Anderson, who was the starting point guard on the 1993 Paint Valley High School team that was coached by Shoemaker and that won the conference. That team was also ranked second in the state. He has also coached the Adena High School junior varsity team.

“Coach Anderson and I are very much looking forward to the camp on Montserrat,” Shoemaker said. “I have worked on Monteserrat before developing the island’s young basketball players back in the early 1990s and also with the island’s national team when they played a tournament in the United States, so it will be great for me to return to the island to continue with developing the skills of the new players there. The camp will provide not only insight and knowledge into the game of basketball but will also emphasize life skills that the campers can carry into the future. The camp is sure to be a rewarding experience for campers and coaches alike.”

More information on the project is available online at http://www.mnialive.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=471:montserrat-basketball-gets-a-touch-of-ohio-flavour&catid=64:mni-view&Itemid=158

Montserrat is a British territory in the Leeward Islands that is part of the chain of islands known as the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. The island is approximately 10 miles long and 7 miles wide with approximately 6,000 residents.

Shoemaker was national coach for Montserrat in the mid-1990s and wrote an article about his experience, which is available online at http://theinsidehandshake.blogspot.com/2009/02/i-wasnt-sure-if-i-wanted-to-tell-this.html

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to return to Montserrat and see the wonderful people there. They've been through so much with the volcano and everything, and for me to be able to return and direct this camp for the athletes there is an absolute honor,” Shoemaker said.

Shoemaker is an elementary school physical education instructor with Paint Valley Local Schools. He was athletic director at Paint Valley from 1997 to 2006 and was varsity boys basketball coach at Paint Valley from 1989 to 1996, and is a former junior high boys basketball, track and football coach with Paint Valley and Greenfield schools. Shoemaker formerly taught at Greenfield. He was named Scioto Valley Conference Coach of the year in 1993 and was Chillicothe Gazette All-Area coach in 1990, 1991 and 1992.
He earned his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in educational administration, both from Ohio University.

OU-C offers women’s teams in volleyball, basketball, softball and tennis, and men’s teams in basketball, golf, baseball and tennis. The Chillicothe Campus competes in the Ohio Regional Campus Conference.

Campus testing center established in Bennett Hall room 274

The campus’ testing services have been consolidated and moved to a central location, Bennett Hall room 274. All make-up and proctored exams and placement tests are now being administered in the testing center.

“Offering these services in a dedicated testing center will offer a more efficient, organized and private way to conduct these tests,” Director of Student Services John Fisher said. “Further, by hosting the testing center in proximity to the Hilltopper Advising Center, we are centralizing and integrating many of our student-support services, which should help our emphasis on retention initiatives. Positioning these related services in one area is more convenient for students and faculty members.”

As previously announced, Rebecca Abaffy has been named testing center coordinator, effective June 22. In this part-time position, she is responsible for overseeing daily operations of the center such as the training and supervision of staff members, and administering tests that are given at the center.

The center is operational from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday.

For improved efficiency, testing center guidelines have been established:

• 48 hours notice is required for scheduling tests
• Tests must be picked up and signed out by the appropriate faculty member
• Faculty members must fill out a cover sheet and attach it to each test
• Students must present appropriate identification
• When the center is unexpectedly closed (inclement weather, etc), exams are automatically rescheduled for the next day

The center can be reached by phone (774-7754) or email, ouctest@ohio.edu.

Message from Dean Burgraff to campus community

Following is an email message from new OU-C Dean Donna Burgraff to the Chillicothe Campus community.

Aug. 2, 2010
Members of the Chillicothe Campus community,

It is with great anticipation and enthusiasm that I officially begin my tenure as dean of Ohio University-Chillicothe. An organization is measured by the strength of its people, and I am particularly struck by the quality of the individuals who make the Chillicothe Campus such a special place.

Since my first contact with members of the search committee and continuing with my interactions with people across campus most recently, it is evident that there is a real spirit of cooperation on campus. People are willing to join together for the common purpose of creating a true learning community on campus.
