Chillicothe Campus faculty member Michael Lafreniere publishes article on ‘collaboratory’ initiative

The collaboratory utilizes technology for a richer educational experience for students.

OU-C faculty member Michael Lafreniere recently published an article, “Developing ‘collaboratories’ in mathematics thanks to multi-tooled LMS’ in the magazine, eCampus News. In the article, Lafreniere shares his insights about the “collaboratory approach” to instruction, which utilizes technology to create a more engaging, active classroom environment.

As he notes in the story, “Leveraging today’s key methods and technologies can create collaborative spaces that enhance student learning and outcomes. A teacher can recapture time spent on traditional learning and create opportunities for exploration of concepts that lead to increased student engagement and mastery level learning …”

Enhanced WebAssign is a web-based software application that can facilitate the collaboratory method much like an LMS.

Among outcomes of this initiative is equipping students with comprehensive coverage of material, resulting in better long-term retention and the improved ability to use their math skills widely and frequently throughout their lives.

A recent news blog story elaborated on Lafreniere’s collaboratory endeavors and can be found online at: http://www.oucnewsblog.com/search?q=Lafreniere.

Lafreniere is associate professor of environmental engineering and mathematics.
