Shoemaker Center bridge project progressing

Construction of a new pedestrian bridge on the upper level of the Shoemaker Center continues. Precast sections are in place, and contractors are currently assembling the upper portion of the deck.  Next steps will be to then install the steel covering, which includes laminated glass with the campus’ name and logo.

Work on the 70-foot bridge is on schedule, and it should be functional by the campus’ May 1 Recognition of Graduation event, although all of the aesthetics may not be complete.

The bridge, which connects the Shoemaker Center with upper level parking lots, was constructed in 1979 and reinforced in 2005. The current project began in mid-November 2014.

The bridge is visible from various locations on campus, and the new structure’s appearance will serve as an attractive focal point of campus with brick architecture and other features that complement the rest of campus.
