Hopefully the new Dean will have better success with communication for all on campus. It would be an enormous boost for moral and hopefully some could regain their enthusiasm for the job they signed on for.

Uh Oh...the Ohio Law banning smoking is in trouble & has been challenged in court! It has been ruled so far that establishments such as resteraunts, bars & yes...our campus...cannot be fined for people smoking on or in their premises...it is unconstitutional...the law states the individual must be fined....not the business, as long as they have all of the appropriate signage...they are not liable for their patrons who ignore the signs...the law is being further reviewed & challenged and could wind up as a referendum on a future voting ballot!

Everyone does not live in town. It says on the web site that the campus operates as usual until a level 3 weather emergency is issued. Ross may be good enough to travel, but if you live out of the county, like I do, sometimes you just can not make it in. If my county is under a snow emergency, I am not going to risk getting a ticket, or wrecking to get to class. It is not worth it. I will continue to try to make up my work, but stay at home where I am safe. Anyone who misses as a result of weather should be allowed to make up missed work.

This really isn't a huge dilemma.

Give smokers a comfortable designated area to smoke and have one of the student employees you pay $8 an hour clean it up for 15 minutes on each class day.

This will:
1. Not alienate the smokers who have to stand outside in 10 degree weather.

2. Localize "the mess" to a small designated area.

3. Allow enforcement for people who clearly break the rules. Fine them if they smoke outside of a designated area and/or if they get caught littering.

All you need is a little pavillion that provides some cover from the wind and has some receptacles and maybe a trash can.

This is not a complicated issue.

I think you are all a bunch of whinners and need to grow up! There are plenty of people that would agree if they gave us a building to smoke in noone would have to look at butts or the people putting them there. Not to mention this would contain all the butts in one area.

No one is trying to degrade any smokers or treat you like second-class citizens. The simple facts are smoking is a health risk to everyone who smokes and everyone who is around smoking. The toxic chemicals in it cause many health problems, some chronic and severe.

You reference caffeine as a vice. The only person you are potentially hurting by ingesting caffeine is yourself.

Yes, tobacco use is an addiction. Most smokers probably wish they could quit and that they had never started the habit in the first place. However, it is possible to quit. It may take you one try, it may take 20. But it is possible to quit.

There is help out there. There are a lot of websites and hotlines. You can even check with the local health department about help or check to see if there are any programs at local hospitals/medical centers. Whatever you are spending on cigarettes, rolling them yourself or buying them already boxed, could be put toward your effort to quit. When you quit a bad habit you try to replace it with a good one.

Although many smokers are being considerate and smoking by the urns and throwing their cigarette butts in them, many however are not. When they are approached by staff or non-smoking students and asked to go out by the urns, they either make rude comments or refuse to move. Anyone who does not follow the University policies and also State policies on smoking are subject to discipline by the University and state.

I am a student & a smoker for 37 years. I would love to quit smoking....so would a lot of other smokers...if you have never been addicted & tried to quit...you have no idea what it is like. Would the non-smokers who are so health centered like to start a fund to pay for the expensive "stop smoking" programs/drugs available? If someone will pay the $150.00 a month for a Chantix prescription for at least 6 months I will quit...unfortunately I am a poor college student & can't afford the prescription...& before someone wisecracks about the money I am spending on cigarettes...I roll my own so they only cost $11.00 a carton. A designated smoking hut like they have all over the VA that keeps us out of the weather (they are heated in the winter & air conditioned in the summer!) would be utilized by all smokers I believe...all you coffee addicts imagine having to go outside & stand in the cold rain to enjoy your vice or get your caffein fix...it just might aggravate you enough to toss your cup towards the receptacle instead of in it. I'm all for a clean campus & hate littering...but smokers are people too & we feel we are being pushed into a corner or treated as second class citizens or even discriminated against. Smokers are social people....we like to talk while we smoke...I assure you if we had a smoking hut in the rear of the buldings we would gather there & I think you would find that we keep it clean too...just leave a broom & dust pan out there!.

Our student handbook clearly states that we ARE a smoke free campus! So we should adhere to our own policy and procedures and ban the tobacco use all together. Not only do I hate to have to hold my breath as I pass through the mounds of cigarette smoke as I walk in or out of the building but the smokers block all of the sidewalks as well!! Leaving me to walk on the road, which does not make me feel very safe. I understand that it is your choice to smoke as it is my choice not to smoke and I have no problem with your smoking when it does not interfere with my health. I am a strong advocate for a smoke free campus but I do feel we need to have some type of course or seminar free of charge to our smoking students to aid them to stop smoking!

Not only are you ruining your health and mine as I breathe in your second hand smoke, but you are ruining the look of our brand new campus with your dirty cigarette buds all over our campus. At least throw them in the proper receptacle, I mean you are standing right beside it, reach and throw them inside instead of on the ground it really is disgusting!!

Tobacco=not an intoxicant=allowed

A more appropriate liquid comparison would be coffee, as several people have stated. But that would be inconvenient for your argument.

Bottom line. Smokers, please follow the rules so as to be allowed to continue your habit. Because if you can't, the trash won't be tolerated forever. And smoking in your car sucks. I know that as a former big, bad tobacco user.

Me don't thinks you understand the concept of 20 feet. That wouldn't even be halfway to the tree line. I would estimate the tree line in most spots being 50-75 feet away. By the way I'm a nonsmoker.
